The Backyard Thief

Back in the backyard with my camera, no tripod—just me, handheld, ready to practise. What I found waiting for me went far beyond the flowers.

Desert Rose

This cheeky magpie picked up one of my garden ties from exactly where I’d left it and flew away with it. I’d planted a Dorothy Perkins climbing rose last year, and this morning I was trying to tame its wildly adventurous canes by gently training them onto the support ropes with that very garden tie — which is, of course, exactly what the magpie decided to steal. Excuse me, that’s mine! 😂

The gardening session didn’t stop with the magpie drama. Two hours of work this morning, and I’ve set myself a goal — two hours of gardening every morning from here on. With the huge tree finally chopped down, the backyard is wide open and ready for a whole new look. I even hauled out the chainsaw this morning, probably waking the neighbours, but it’s all part of carving out this big, glorious space. Exciting times ahead.
