Practice Folder — Where It All Began

By DJFotoPerfect

It started with one photo.

One capture that made me pause and think — maybe I can do this.

So, I created a folder called Practice.

Not to perfect anything,

but to remember where I began.

Close-up of a branch with bright red flowers against a blurred natural background.
Close-up image of bare branches adorned with small red flowers against a blurred green background.

Every image in that folder tells a quiet story —

the shaky hands, the excitement, the little victories no one else saw.

Light, colour, patience, and pride —

they all live there.

I didn’t stop after the first one.

Once I started, I just kept going.

And somewhere along the way,

practice became purpose.

  1. Something I came on today, in a book on gardening, which I think reflects the practice of photography: “…a shortening of the distance between the materially real and the transcendently imagines, “Annihilating all that’s made to a green thought in a green shade.” – the latter quotation from Walter Pater’s The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry. (1888)

    1. That’s such a beautiful reflection, Paddy. I love how you’ve drawn that bridge between gardening and photography — both tending to life and light in their own ways. Thank you for sharing this thought; it gave me something lovely to pause on today.

  2. My partner loves photography. His patience capturing, what he perceives, as the perfect shot transcends all else. The obvious satisfaction he derives from the experience is almost palpable.
There are many ways to bring focus and stillness to the mind, however, this must be one of the most enjoyable.

    1. Your words capture it perfectly, Carolyn — the stillness, the satisfaction, the quiet joy. That’s exactly why I fell in love with photography.

    1. Thank you Mitch, it was and learning at that time was fantastic because I just travel anyway to exposure.
